As a part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, graduate and professional students are no longer
eligible to apply for subsidized loans effective July 1, 2012.
The Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loan enables graduate students to borrow up to $20,500 per
academic year, with an aggregate total not to exceed $138,500 (undergraduate and graduate
combined). Loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2017 will carry a fixed interest rate and an origination fee. Additional information can be found in the Master Promissory Note.
The Federal Government has set the Origination Fee to 1.069% and the Unsubsidized Interest Rate at 6.0% for the 2017 -2018 academic year.
To apply, please complete the Stafford Unsubsidized Loan Application and submit to Amy Gassel.
Preferred application date is July 1st to ensure that the loan is available by the beginning of the fall semester. The student loan application deadline for the academic year is April 15th (the 2nd semester of enrollment).
Eligibility is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a student loan Master Promissory Note and the amount of assistance awarded by your academic Department. Applications may be requested at the above address.
A new application is required each academic year.
Students reapplying for the Stafford Unsubsidized Loan must submit the following to Amy Gassel:
- The FAFSA, which may be accessed and completed via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
- A Budget for their upcoming academic year
- The Unsubsidized Federal Direct Student Loan Request Form
