Leadership Spotlight Series: Umang

By zoglesby

Welcome back! This week I had to chance to talk with Darshit Mehta the Treasurer of Umang and ask him some questions about the organization.

What is it?
Umang is the Indian Graduate Student organization. Their focus is helping Indian students, and South-Asian students in general, integrate into the United States. They host various festivals for students to celebrate and provide assistance to new students, doing everything from arranging transport from the airport for new arrivals, to providing short term accommodations when students have just arrived and are just settling in.

How can I take part?

While Umang is focused on supporting South-Asian students, their events are open to all graduate students. They are a great deal of fun and a chance to learn more about the culture and festivals that they are based on! Students interested in helping out should make sure to connect with a member of Umang at the event, or to reach out to them on their Facebook page.

What events are coming up soon?
Umang next major event will be in the spring, Holi, the Festival of Colors, and more information will be posted as it approaches. For the time being however Umang is also hosting a holiday party on December 21st! Watch their facebook group for more info!

What else should I know?
On October 28 Umang held their other major celebration of the year, the Festival of Light, Diwali. The largest festival in India, Diwali is a day of celebration and joy in the darkest part of the year. While the festival has passed for this year, those who will be around next fall should make sure to check it out, I have it on very good authority that it is a wonderful experience.
