Graduate School Hooding + Recognition Ceremony

PhD and Master’s Degree recipients who graduated August 2018, December 2018 or who will be graduating in May 2019, are invited to participate in the Graduate School 2019 Hooding & Recognition Ceremony. Hooding & Recognition Ceremonies are reserved for students who have completed all Degree Requirements by April 22, 2019.

Those who completed their degrees prior to the 2018 dates are also eligible to participate.

            Ceremony will begin promptly at 4:00pm




3:00 – 3:15pm             Graduates & Faculty Hooders Check-In (Lobby of Athletic Complex)

3:15 - 3:45pm              Procession line-up: Graduates wear their tassel on the left

                                    PhD graduates: Drape hood over left arm

                                    Master’s graduates: Wear hoods

4:00 pm                       Procession begins



All degree recipients and Faculty Hooders participating in the Graduate School Hooding & Recognition Ceremony are required to be in full regalia (academic caps, gowns, and hoods). For additional information about regalia please visit the Commencement Website.



We welcome participating degree recipients to walk with their children at the ceremony. Children are welcome to meet their parent in line, and escort their parents across the stage.



The Athletic Complex is located at the west end of the Danforth Campus. Enter the Athletic Complex by the main entrance facing the tennis courts. Volunteers will be on hand to guide you to the registration area and help your guests to the Varsity Gym.


Parking is available throughout the campus and can be located on the Danforth Map


Guests may enter the gym as early as 3:00pm. Please remind your guests that they may have up to a 10 minute walk from parking to the Varsity Gym and should plan accordingly.

Accessible Parking is available in all parking areas on campus. More information on campus accessibility can be found here.


An elevator will be available for guests who need it. However, it is important to note it is quite a long walk from the elevator to the Varsity Gym. Please plan accordingly and consider bringing a wheelchair for those guests who may have trouble walking long distances.




A reception for Doctoral and Master’s Graduates will be held Friday, May 17 immediately following the University-wide Commencement.


Please join the Graduate School staff on the lawn near the east end of the John M. Olin Library (across from Cupples II) as we celebrate the achievements of our graduates.


Graduates may pick up their diplomas at the reception until 1:00pm. Any diploma that has not been picked up by that time will be held in the Office of the University Registrar for approximately two weeks. Mailing of diplomas will begin shortly thereafter to the post-graduation address as indicated on the Intent to Graduate form.




If Commencement on Friday, May 17 is canceled due to severe weather, the Graduate School Reception and Diploma Distribution will be held in the Rain Location:
