Evolution of Epinenetic Regulation in Vertebrate Genomes

The epigenome refers to chemical and structural modifications to DNA that regulate which genes are expressed when. How the epigenome has evolved to specify correct gene regulation is an understudied question. In this review, we synthesize the comparative epigenomics literature — studies which analyze epigenome differences between species or between cell and tissue types in a single species — to distill the current understanding of epigenome evolution. Additionally, we point out the need for a more quantitative understanding of epigenome evolution and propose a framework to guide future comparative epigenome analyses.
